Extra-curricular Music

School Musical

Each year our talented students and staff produce a West-End worthy school musical. Auditions for this typically begin in the first week of term and rehearsals take place every day after school. Our show usually takes place on two weeks before Halloween midterm. Our school has a long and proud tradition of bringing outstanding quality musicals to the stage in the Premier Hall. Past productions include Seussical Jnr. (2019), Mary Poppins (2018), Sister Act (2017), Billy Elliot (2016) and The Lion King (2015).

In recent years, we have won national accolades, including the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre Awards for ‘Best School Musical’ for two consecutive years in a row: 2015 for The Lion King and 2016 for Billy Elliot. In 2016 our student, Zoe Gleeson, also won the prestigious ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award.

Pres Singers

Our School’s choir, Pres Singers, welcomes girls from all year groups. They meet all year round, usually one lunchtime per week and one forty-minute evening class each week. Our Pres singers perform at events such as the CEIST conference, School Concerts, Arts festivals such as Culture Night, School Masses and Services, Open Evenings and any major School event.

School Orchestra

Our School’s orchestra welcomes girls from all year groups, who can play an instrument. They meet all year round, usually one lunchtime per week and one forty-minute evening class each week. Our orchestra performs at events such as the CEIST conference, School Concerts, Arts festivals such as Culture Night, School Masses and Services, Open Evenings and any major School event.

School Trad Group

The trad group welcomes all students who play Irish music to meet one lunchtime a week to play/learn a few tunes, while getting to know others from different classes and year groups. We also perform at many school events throughout the year.

Guitar

There are guitar lessons available one evening per week at beginner and intermediate levels (see form below for details).

Ukulele group

We offer free ukulele tuition one lunchtime every week. The group performs in the Christmas Show and Musical Evening each year.

Grand Piano

We are the proud and excited owners of a Grand Piano, which we have on our stage in the Assembly Hall. This is a wonderful addition for our Music department and our Music students.

Private Music Lessons

Here in Presentation Secondary School Thurles, we provide a variety of instrumental lessons.

Instruments are available for private tuition. The instruments available are piano, flute, saxophone, clarinet, violin, harp, guitar and singing lessons.

Each private lesson is one-to-one. Our instrumental teachers are highly qualified and dedicated in achieving a high standard of playing. We have violins and flutes available for rent along with various pianos to practise on in our practice rooms.

Each year all students, if desired, are entered in The Royal Irish Academy of Music exams.

Forms, as seen here, can be downloaded and printed. Alternatively, they can be collected from and returned to the school’s office, with the exception of singing/voice training lessons. The arrangement of and payment for singing/voice training lessons will need to be directly with Jim Maley at voice@jamesmaley.com (see the form for further details).

Lessons will take place during the school day on a rota basis, which is posted on the noticeboard. All levels are welcome from beginner to advanced.
