Think Languages 2024 – Presentation Thurles, Runners-Up in Think Languages All-Ireland Final

A Post-Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI) initiative, this national language event for TY students, works to raise awareness of the many languages and cultures in Ireland and around the world. Over 250 schools and 17,500 TY students took part in this national festival. Our school celebrated Think Languages Week from Monday 18th November to Friday 22nd November 2024.
Our Champion Team members included: Tara Moquet (Team Captain), Hannah Molloy (Activities Manager), Katie Shanahan (Marketing and Social Media Manager), Abbey Challen (Festival Scheduling Manager), Aoife Doyle (Production Manager) and Gráinne Dowling (Research Manager).
TY activities and online workshops took place during Think Languages Week, in classes, culminating in our Friday Funfest on Friday 22nd November in the main hall. TY students enjoyed preparing and sampling European dishes in Home Economics class. Thank you to Sinéad Egan for her delicious school menu with treats and dishes from around the world. Our TY Choir performed 'Silent Night' in French, German, English and as Gaeilge. TY Art worked on a Cultural Identity project. TY Science studied Scientists and discoveries of the world. TY Religion examined how Christmas is celebrated in countries around the world. TY Geography discovered Paris and France in preparation for their TY School Tour.
Students enjoyed German and French films, Indian Yoga, Zumba, a Céilí and a Japanese calligraphy taster class with Erica Marcet and her student team from the University of Limerick. The Think Languages Team visited our 5th class primary school pupils, giving a taster French lesson.
Our school was one of ten schools shortlisted for judging, based on our application, outlining our programme of events for the Champion Team competition. On Friday 22nd November 2024, Laura Quigley (PPLI, Education Officer), visited our school to judge our Think Languages Week in action. Based on the success of our week, our school was one of four schools to qualify for the Champion Team All-Ireland Final Competition.
Our Friday Funfest promoted language learning opportunities in our school. Students spoke of their positive experiences on our German, French and Japanese cultural exchange programmes. We learned about our Kolkata trip and our TY Gaeltacht visit. Past pupils shared video clips on their language experiences at third level and parents in the school community outlined the role languages play in the business world.
Our International students gave presentations on their countries to our TY students, sharing costume, food and information on their native lands. Did you know that there are eighteen different languages spoken on our school corridors every day?! Our guest speaker on the day was Language Teacher, former Deputy-Principal and friend of the Pres, Mary B. Lanigan Ryan. She shared the opportunities that languages afford and how we can learn and respect one another as language learners.
We closed an enjoyable, fun-filled day with a scene from our hugely successful and much loved school musical, ‘The Sound of Music’. All students received their certificates for part-taking in a busy and rewarding Think Languages Week 2024.
The Think Languages Champion Team All-Ireland Final took place on Thursday 23rd January 2025 in the Department of Education, Dublin. Our team showcased their Think Languages journey, outlining their roles and what they learned from the overall experience. The girls were outstanding ambassadors for themselves, the Pres and their families and we were so very proud of their achievement on reaching the All-Ireland Final. The Think Language experience will leave a lasting impression with this wonderful TY team. The girls flourished in their roles, learning many new skills, creating new friendships as they learned about the importance of language learning and promoting cultural awareness in a fun and enjoyable way.
Míle buíochas, Merci, Herzlichen Dank….to all our students, language teachers, teachers, school staff, parents, friends of the Pres and our Think Languages Champion Team for their outstanding work and support, ensuring a memorable and successful ‘Think Languages Week 2024’. Pres abú!
Annerville Awards Ceremony
Last Saturday night, we were delighted to attend the annual Annerville Awards ceremony in the Talbot Hotel, Clonmel, where our All-Ireland Senior A soccer champions in 2024 were recognised in a fabulous ceremony. Elite athletes from all across County Tipperary were bestowed with awards for exceptional achievements in their sporting discipline. Our Captain, Grace Flanagan, along with Ciara Breslin and past pupil and scorer of the winning goal, Molly O’Dwyer, proudly accepted this special award on behalf of the team, our coaches, Mr Barry Ryan and Mr Cian Treacy, and our whole school community. #presproud

Hockey
Well done to our Senior B Hockey team who had a great home derby win against our neighbours, Ursuline Thurles, on Wednesday last in the Munster Cup. Our girls now progress to the Munster semi-final. Our scorers included Emily Carroll, Claudia Rueda (2), Orla Duggan (2) and Aoife O’Grady. Congrats to all of the team and to their coach, Ms Marie Flanagan.

History Classes
Well done to the 1st Year History students in N. Eithne, who have been very busy recently with their History projects, ‘The Past in my Place’. Their task was to build a model of a local historical building. Some fantastic exhibits were on display in their classroom last week with some of the design team members displaying future architect potential! #historyproject #presthurles.
