School Thurles
The First Year A basketball team are unbeaten in the Midlands Regional A league. They defeated; Mercy Waterford, St Marys Naas, Rathangan, Sacred Heart School Tullamore and Scoil Dara Kilcock. They played last years champions The Bower Athlone in their final league game of the season. The girls were determined to win and finish top of the league. Pres were fast out of the blocks and opened up an early lead of 6 points. Fiona Morrissey was very impressive picking up all 6 points in the first quarter. The half time score 10-4 in our favour, Athlone upped the tempo in the second half. They clawed their way back into the game and closed the gap to just 4 points heading into the final quarter. Presentation had the ability to step it up a notch and in the final quarter Presentation sealed the win with an excellent shooting display from Aoife Butler. Final score 16-12.Having finished first in the region they are guaranteed qualification and a home venue for the midland semi-final. The girls have shown great ability and determination throughout the season. They are very motivated to win next week in the midlands semi-final and guarantee a spot in the midlands final and the all-Ireland playoffs. Congratulations to four Junior Cert students who travelled to UCC on Saturday March 12th to take part in a written and aural test in Mandarin Chinese. Mags Mockler, Bessie Pilinci and Beth Ryan sat Level 1, and Charlene Tam sat Level 4. A big thank you, xièxiè to their teacher Ling for preparing her students. Hats off to these four fantastic girls!
