Art Department News:

Congratulations to Kelly Morris (5th Year) who won first prize in the 14 to 17 years category in the Thurles Credit Union poster competition, Therese Dwan (1st Year) who came first in her category and Sophie McCullagh (1st year) who came second in the 11 to 13 year category. Well done to the three girls on their creative, colourful and artistic entries.

Our fifth and sixth year students recently paid a visit to the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin to view the paintings and studio of Irish born and world renowned artist Francis Bacon. The girls then went to the National Gallery to see paintings by Picasso and Carevaggio as well as other famous international and national artists. Finally we went to the National museum to see the Derrynaflan Chalice, Ardagh Chalice, the Tara Brooch, the extensive gold collection and the bog bodies.

The senior students also had a day in the Boyne valley. This commenced with a visit to Monasterboice where they saw the impressive tenth century Muiredeach’s cross. They then went into St. Peter’s cathedral in Drogheda where they prayed at the shrine to St. Oliver Plunket. The day concluded with a guided tour of the Newgrange, World Heritage Neolithic site. The girls were in buoyant mood after entering the passage grave, appreciating the experience and admiring the construction and decoration.

CSPE Project:

A second year class, N.Gobnait, collected Christmas shoeboxes on behalf of the Heart to Hand Foundation, as part of their C.S.P.E Action Project. The Heart to Hand Foundation is an Irish charity with close links to Tipperary. A group of volunteers from Holycross/Ballycahill led by Fr.Celsus Tierney, have been working on building Projects in Albania over the past six years.
The girls with their teachers, Ms.Harrold and Mrs.Nolan, worked really hard in promoting the shoebox appeal throughout the school. Over 150 boxes were collected. These boxes are making their way to Albania at present. Many thanks to all who generously donated.

Soccer:

Best of luck to the First year soccer team who are competing in the All Ireland soccer final in Meath on Tuesday.
