Football:

Congratulations to the senior football team who recently qualified for the final of the Munster senior plate competition. Presentation Thurles played Presentation Milltown in the semi-final and from the starting whistle were well and truly the stronger team. An all round well balanced team performance carried through right to the end and Presentation Thurles emerged winners by a large margin. This team is improving with every performance and are eagerly awaiting the final which will be played against Carrigaline or St. Anne’s in the coming weeks.

Hockey News:

On Monday last January 16th, the 2nd year, Junior and Senior hockey teams travelled to Tipperary town to play Laurel Hill Colaiste in league competitions. The 2nd year team were the first to play and from the start showed great determination and despite many attempts on goal the Laurel Hill defence held firm. However just after half time Aoife Collier broke the deadlock with another goal from Aoife Sweeney shortly after. Later Laurel Hill got a consolation goal but Presentation held out for the win in the end. There were great performances all round from, Maria Cullinane, Aoife Collier, Niamh Kennedy and Claire McCormack.
The Senior team were unfortunate to be defeated by the narrowest of margins. Despite bearing down on the Laurel Hill Colaiste for much of the game, the centre back blocked almost all attacks. Laurel Hill had two opportunities in the Presentation circle and converted both. Presentation kept hopes alive with a goal from Lydia O’Toole but it wasn’t enough in the end. Again there were great performances from Sarah Jane O’Riordan, Niamh Cullinane, Amie Dudley and Eimear Grace.
The Juniors were last to play and got off to a super start with a goal from Megan Bailey. There were opportunities of attack created by Niamh Sweeney, Kate Kavanagh and Kirsty Harris. Laura Finlay continued to mop up in defence. At half time Presentation were a comfortable 2-0 up and continued this pressure in the second half. Further goals from Marie Cooney, Kate Kavanagh and Kirsty Harris sealed all three points.

Munster Soccer:

Presentation Thurles v Christ the King, Cork

The Presentation Thurles Senior Soccer team were knocked out of the Munster Cup on Monday January 16th 2012 when they lost to a very impressive team from Christ the King Secondary School in Cork at the semi-final stage.
The game was played at the fantastic facilities at Peake Villa F.C. in Thurles and the home side got off to the best possible start when forward Edel O’ Dwyer netted within the first five minutes. From then on, however, the Cork girls showed their superior strength in front of goal as they managed to notch up 5 goals in twenty minutes. The girls in red rallied as best they could and 1st Year Sarah McKevitt scored a stunning goal when she lobbed the goal keeper from out side the box to leave it 5-2 at the break.
The second half saw Presentation Thurles create lots of chance but great saves from the Christ the King meant that it just wasn’t going to be the girls’ day. Best of luck to the Cork girls in the final.
Focus now turns to 1st Year Munster League and Cup competitions and considering the fact that 5 first year students lined out on the senior team the future certainly looks bright for soccer in Presentation Thurles. Watch this space!
