School Thurles
The inaugural Presentation Secondary Schools Debating Competition took place on Friday 1st April in Scoil Chriost Ri in Portlaoise. The purpose of this competition was to encourage debating and public speaking among students of Presentation Secondary Schools. There were teams from four schools competing on the day; Scoil Chriost Ri Portlaoise, Presentation Secondary School Kildare, Colaiste Iosagain Portarlington and Presentation Secondary School Thurles. There was a junior and senior category. Presentation Thurles had five teams competing on the day. Second Year students Laura Finlay, Jane Meade, Mary O Connor and Meggie Fitzgerald and First Year students Claire McCormack and Eimear Duff took part in the junior category. Davina Henderson and Claire Holohan from Fifth Year and Aine McCarthy and Lucy Blake, both Transition Year students took part in the senior competition. Competitiors had to take part in two debates with the winners going through to the final. Congratulations to Claire Holohan and Davina Henderson who were overall winners in the senior competition and to Mary O Connor and Meggie Fitzgerald who were overall winners in the junior competition. Well done girls.
On Wednesday 6th of April, the 2nd Year basketball ‘B’ team played host to St Anne’s Secondary School Tipperary and Presentation Ballingarry Thurles in the School’s Annual Basketball Blitz. Our girls won out their matches and qualified for the final. Unfortunately luck was not on their side and they were defeated.

On Tuesday 5th of April, Transition Year and 2nd Year students attended the Limerick Institute of Technology for Sci Fest 2011. Sci Fest is a series of one-day science fairs funded by Intel Ireland and Discover Science and Engineering and hosted nationwide by the Institutes of Technology.Prior to the competition, the girls worked eagerly on their projects, displaying not only dedication but scientific expertise also. The hard work and effort paid off on the day with the Pres girls winning most of the awards. The overall Intel Best Project Award went to Tara O’ Carroll and Aoife Sutton who will now go on to exhibit at Intel next October. Winners of this event will represent Ireland at the International Science and Engineering fair in Pittsburgh.

Intermediate Life Sciences Category: 1st place and Overall Intel Best Project Award: Tara O’Connell and Aoife Sutton Project Title: Multi vitamin Supplements= Thriving lambs True or False?
2nd Place: Yvonne Mullins Project Title: Investigation and comparisons of different silage wrappings.
3rd Place: Sarah-Jane O’Riordan, Orlaith Quigley and Alison Kelly Project Title: Is Breast Best: A Mum’s View
Discover Sensor Award: This was won by Sarah O’Brien and Laura Walsh. Project Title: To investigate the jumping potential of horses.
Special Award Maths Applied in Science: This was won by Eimear O’ Meara and Ellen Lanigan. Project Title: The nature of crawling and first steps
The Best School Award went to The Presentation Secondary School.
